I love characters who are willing to do anything for a cause, regardless of the cost to themselves or others, and who then have to deal with said costs to themselves and others. Especially when the story takes the time to weigh whether they might have been right or not, if their actions have the intended effect, and how other people, especially those damaged, are going to react regardless.

It only works when 'dealing with the consequences' doesn't mean 'angsts privately for four episodes but turns out to be completely right and never faces any external consequences at all', though. Sometimes internal angst is awesome and counts as 'costs to self', but most of the time I need external consequences too, especially with the scale of some of the things some characters do for their causes.
