Ideas you want to steal (but probably won't)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, yeah, "imitation is the highest form of flattery" but it still feels wrong to read a fic and go "Wow, I love this idea...but it's really shitty execution, I think I'll redo it."

It's been a long time since I had this feeling. The first was an actually reasonably decent SG-1 fic where the team is forced to push Daniel away and be really cruel to prove he's not selling secrets. This one is for my TV obsession du jour: Criminal Minds.

Basically, gay college students are being targeted/killed by a serial killer, and to catch him (I assume it's a him, I couldn't finish it), Morgan and Reid go undercover as lovers. I really hated the way the narrative just dropped "Everyone knew Reid was dating a guy and Morgan was bisexual!" into the story and it's just so blugh. Clearly setting up to be full of Reid angst over unrequited-until-they're-not feelings -- and honestly...I'd probably go that route too, I just feel like I'd do it so much better. But that's shitty.

Anyone else face this problem? What was the story like?

Not related to this because I haven't read fic in a long time, but I just got into CM through a friend and I'm currently on season four and ALL I WANT WITH ALL OF MY SOUL is for Morgan and Garcia to get together. Whyyyyyyy are they not together??

They clearly love each other, but I think the makers are intent on making it platonic, it's just they don't act platonic.

Which really makes no sense to me. I mean they've tossed romance in and out of the show plenty of times, why not them?

THANK YOU!!!

Does anyone know where I can find some good fic of this? Even something where the platonic waters get stormy but the bridge is not crossed.

Stories, I know it's happened once or twice but I can't remember the details now. I get it a lot with fanvids and pony customs, though. Most of my motivation to someday finish my Weeping Angel ponies is the fact that all the ones I've seen are just so bad.

So, I trudged through a little more of this fic (was double-checking the noncanon sexualities treated as if they were canon), and it's not only "Reid's unrequited love," it's also "Reid's abusive longterm boyfriend who beats him all the time while he somehow keeps it all secret from the rest of the FBI Behavior Analysis Unit, plus associated angst thereof."

I actually did "take" the story once. Basically it went like this, there was this group of two or three incredibly pretentious so-so writers who would basically take a plot and analyze it to the point of death. Like, instead of writing it while the idea was fresh and new and they were excited about it, they took it and deconstructed it (in order to figure out how to 'write' it) until all the spontaneity and naturalness went out of it. And it was a damned good plot bunny. The scene just opened itself in my head, and once I saw how they were intent on talking it to death, I opened my Word and wrote it myself. Then I sent it to my writing buddies and titled it "this is how you write that scene (we were all members of the same board)". Then I posted it once my beta looked it over.

It was a shitty thing to do but I don't honestly have any regrets. For me, there's a naturalness to writing. Those writers constantly wanted to talk the process to death instead of just writing the damned thing. It didn't deserve to die on the vine like that. Not when I already saw it in my head.

What was the story, though, anon?

Also, did the other people ever get around to writing their version of it? Was there ever a larger consensus on which of them was better?

I don't want to be too specific but it was basically just a h/c hospital visit. SIMPLE premise.

Did they? I don't believe so. I don't know if it was because I posted mine first, or if it was because they talked about it so much they never got around to writing it. I guess I'll never know but I'm not losing any sleep over it either.
