Re: book club

I dunno. Nobody bothered to read The Plague Stone, despite it being available online in PDF and Itunes-document and copies for sale on ebay and other sites, and people are already posting their excuses for not bothering with Southern Fire (seriously, can't read it because it contains a pregnant woman? weaksauce! or it isn't available from the *right* stores). What is the point then? I blame you for this, by the way, if the club organizer is prepared to pull out excuses like not wanting to read the text-doc because they don't want to buy a paperback from the wrong store, then why should anyone else? Club organizer *has* to go the extra mile on a book club read. What is the point of reccing anything else?

That's fucking ridiculous. It's not diet_poison's fault that the book wasn't widely available, and attacking them for it makes no sense at all. They've done a lot of really awesome work keeping this thing together. It's just a process of ironing out the kinks, that's all.

um

if the club organizer is prepared to pull out excuses like not wanting to read the text-doc because they don't want to buy a paperback from the wrong store

what? When did I say that? I said I have a tight budget and the two places I could have gotten the book legally and for free didn't have it despite them being easily the two places that are the most likely to have any given book available in my area (the library and the huge chain bookstore that I have a gift card to). I also wasn't under any impression that I'd be required to read the book under any circumstances since, you know, I'm busy just like everyone else and in a month where a book is hard for me to get, or really doesn't appeal to me, or where I just don't have time...it's the same as any other person who decides to opt out. I'm doing all the organization work. If you want to volunteer to help and you think you could make it better, by all means, get a sock and message me.

When you say "available in an online PDF", do you mean pirating? Because there are a lot of people who are (understandably) uncomfortable with pirating.

Additionally, lots of people read Fingersmith and The Golem and the Jinni which WERE readily available and peoples' libraries and the like. As you might have noticed from reading the threads in the past few days, I'm trying to take steps to ensure people know about book availability and make it more likely that we'll pick a book people can get their hands on easily. Multiple people had issues with The Plague Stone - it was definitely not just me.

seriously, can't read it because it contains a pregnant woman? weaksauce!

Ok, first of all, did you even read that comment? Anon specifically stated that they were still going to read it, even if they didn't like that part. Secondly, people have every right to opt out for any reason. This isn't a graded class and nobody is required to participate. If pregnancy or some other theme makes someone uncomfortable they don't have to read the book, and how is it any skin off your nose?

tl;dr you are taking this a bit too seriously. If you don't want to participate, you don't have to. If you don't want to rec, you don't have to.

And, of course, if you have any suggestions on making the process better for everyone, I'd love to hear them. But a bunch of complaining and finger-pointing without anything constructive doesn't really help.

Some points:

First, you do not and cannot presume to know everyone's situation, anon. I, for one, didn't read 'The Plague Stone' not because I couldn't get it, but because August was simply not a good month for me. I was very busy, going away for days at a time and working on a project with a hard deadline. I will be participating this month, as I have far more time to devote to reading.

Second, the fact that things did not work out during one month does not mean that they can't or won't work out during other months. It's rather defeatist to presume that there's now "no point" in participating, particularly since the worst that happens is that we all get recs for books that we might not otherwise have read.

Third, given the fact that she didn't reveal she hadn't read the book until the end of the month, it's disingenuous to blame diet_poison for the lack of interest in August. It would be disingenuous even so; she's an organizer, not a discussion leader, and whether she participates or not should be immaterial to the people who are truly interested in reading and discussing the month's book.

Fourth, this is a casual book club on a casual web site. You're taking it way too seriously, and if you have to ask "what's the point," then might I refer back to my earlier statement that, at the least, you get a rec for and/or wind up reading something new? Even if there's no formal discussion, those of us who love to read can still get something out of it.
