Re: Favorite Character Flaws
The problem with "self-sacrificing" is that it's safe. The flaw basically boils down to "this person is so good of a person that they would rather suffer than have someone else suffer." Like... yeah so would Jesus Christ. Are you saying your character is so bad that they're Jesus-like? Wow, she needs to get it together.
And yeah, women in real life can be self-sacrificing, but a) I doubt they're happy about it the way fictional characters often serenely accept death as long as ~her loved ones are safe~ and b) what else is there? Self-sacrificing sure, but is she also snooty? Controlling? Judgmental? Volatile? Melodramatic? Vain? Genuinely repulsively stupid? Or hey, maybe the character could be resentful about her need to help others? Unhappy about it? The character is given no other real flaws besides "she would die for her friends". That's not reflective of reality. That's just self-indulgence because you're afraid to make your fictional girlfriend/self-insert "ugly" in any way. There are beautiful people in real life, but they are not perfect.
