I sort of get that - I've read fic where it bothered me. But to be fair, it only bothers me for places I know relatively well.

Yeah, Google is great, and obviously people should do some research. But, I also acknowledge it's really hard to get a feel for a place you've never even been to.

You can get names and places, even building, but that still won't give you all info. It's still hard to write realistically about a place you only saw on pics.

I got the impression the OP was mainly referring to distances as opposed to the places themselves. I've read plenty of fics where the author has the characters road-tripping between two cities in an unrealistic amount of time.

Haha, pro authors can't even manage that half the time.

Ah, fair enough - yeah, that's totally researchable.

That's how I read it, too, and it's also something I'm totally anal about. What would drive me nuts in my last fandom is that there were a ton of road trip fics, but no one would bother to check google maps for distances and probable times (one fic had people driving from Oregon to Virginia in the course of an afternoon).

I agree, although I think there's a difference between "I haven't been to this place and only know it from pictures/descriptions, so some of this might sound off to someone who is very familiar with that place" and "I was too lazy to google the distance between these two places or to look up if the building I'm talking about even existed at the time I'm talking about". And I think OP is complaining more about the second thing.
