Where do you get your comics? I haven't read any new comics in several years and I've always gotten the actual comics before, but it sounds like there are downloadable comics now, and I'm wondering if that's where the majority of people get their comics now.

I'm asking because there's a thing for Yuletide to promote your fandom and I'd like to recommend these comics I used to read but I'm not sure how readily available they are. I can see there are TPBs and digital comics on Amazon (I've never used these). I'm wondering if I was going to recommend this fandom if I should just suggest this or if there are other ways for people to comics. Are there any free services?

In a recommendation post for a comic book title, what would you like to see to make you more likely to try the comic (based solely on availability/format and not on the interest of the comic storyline/etc.)?

I get most of them from my local comic shop, some trades from the library and ones that I am completely meh but still kinda, sort of want to read about I check them out on 4chan.

Can you give me more information about that? I've never been to 4chan, and I'm not sure if I should recommend others look there or not. Would anyone interested in a comic who reads from 4chan just know where to look there? Or would it be worth it to see if my series is on 4chan and provide a link? Thanks!

It's more of a crapshoot on 4chan. First you look under the comics and cartoons section and then you hope that someone posted the issue. (It's usually labeled as "storytime." Like "It's latest issue of Wonder Woman storytime.") The best time to get the issue you want to read is the Wednesday the issue comes out. That's when people try to beat each other to posting it. But, again, you are not always guaranteed.

Comixology might be a website to recommend, if the title is on there. I'm guessing you don't want to say what the series is?

Thank you for the suggestion! I did a quick look and I don't think they carry the title. They might be too old :( That's good to know though!

I would honestly just recommend a link to download the series then, if you feel ok with suggesting that (and then add a link to buy the tpb on Amazon or wherever, if it's still in print?) Try googling the series name + "masterpost" and see what comes up.

tl;dr is that if you're looking for legal methods to do it, comixology and similar apps are good, but a massive, MASSIVE amount of comics are out of print and not sold even in online/digital retailers. For these your only recourse is torrents.

The series stopped about ten years ago but it is available on Amazon for a decent-ish price. Do you think most comic fans can figure it out for themselves if I told them it was old and gave them the keywords/Wikipedia page? Or do you think they wouldn't bother if all I gave them was the Amazon links? Have you ever read the digital comics on Amazon? Are they crappy?

I've never read Amazon's offerings, but in my experience digital comics tend to be pretty high resolution (many of the weekly offerings on my usual torrent site tend to be digital rips.)

Honestly I suspect people looking to get into the comic (do you mind if I ask what series this is?) would probably buy digital copies on Amazon if it were readily available.

(It's all the Crossgen titles. I'm not sure if they'd be considered "good" or not but I enjoyed them back when they were coming out. I'm not a hardcore comic person though so I'm not sure how they compare to more well known comics and characters. The company did go bankrupt after all but I figure they're diverse enough that most people will find at least one title to like.)

That's interesting! A lot of big names like Mark Waid and Ron Marz worked for them.

Yeah, Marvel snapped them up and did a bit of a "reboot" a few years ago (not really the same characters or universe at all but using the same comic titles and character names).

I don't really know for sure, but I think it was a bit of a big deal when they started since they poached a bunch of talent from Marvel and DC. I think they were well received and getting good press. I think it's generally agreed that they went bankrupt because they expanded too fast and not because the titles sucked. They were known for being innovative in how they were selling comics (like they would print something like a TPB but instead of one title, it was all the new titles that came out that week, so you'd just buy that every week instead of the individual comics).

I think they might've been one of the first companies to offer online comics of some sort. It sounds like if they hadn't been so aggressive, they might still be around. It's a shame what happened.

Sounds more like the Japanese model? (monthlies like Shonen Jump & Chara Selection that group chapters from various similar titles )

Maybe. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with any Japanese titles. They do sound similar. Here's what Crossgen offered:

It's a similar idea - an anthology-type publication.

These days I've been buying digital downloads from Image. DRM-free. Alternately I might pick something up in trade paperback format.

I usually buy mine but I've torrented titles I owned already (or I was looking into whether or not to buy).
