Yeah, I disagree with that idea, too, though I do think there is an interactive element to "being in fandom" that doesn't exactly fit with lurking (at least, not how I lurk).

I think there's levels of it. Like, take me for instance, pretty much all of my fandom interaction is anonymous and I don't really output anything or have fandom friends, but I still do low level things like comment.

There's probably a few people out there who don't even comment or interact with fandom, but observe a lot of fandom happenings. A true lurker if you will.

Then there's people who have a close knit group of fandom friends, but don't interact with fandom at large.

I consider those all levels of lurking.

Interesting. My definition of lurking is much narrower with two levels: leaving or not leaving kudos, and a special type of lurking with a statistics blocker to prevent affecting hits and visits stats.

Interacting with fandom at large is like a super unlurking, the ultimate opposite of lurking.

I write fic and meta, comment here (too lazy to log in atm), but don't get to know people on a personal level like PMing or Skype.
