Honestly my favorite thing about les mis is how clearly and ardently he loves Paris.

I think that's much more common in published fic.

The writer has a book deal for a series and their ideas suddenly dry up, or don't stretch to a full book each time, so in goes huge chunks of thinly-disguised research. The Agatha Raisin book series is guilty of this on occasion.

A fic writer would just stop writing until their ideas returned.

Fuck. I kind of did that with Squander (even though I never actually visited any of the locations in the gargantuan RPF story). I have no regrets, though.
