What happened to it in the first place?

According to the reasonable individuals over at /a/ copyrightfirms acting on behalf of the Japanese government carried out targeted DDoS with significant backing, and the only reason it's been allowed up is to harvest IP address for people downloading shounen shit like SAO to send out countless letters to people breaching copyright. It's going to be down by this saturday when they start up again.

Also funimation, crunchyroll, Daiz, and reverse vampires are involved somehow.

Huh, if that's really what happened then I'm glad I don't use Nyaa. It isn't like there's ton of other places to get anime torrents.
