I guess I understood it, I just don't understand why it's appealing.

Because they are jokes? The mental image of a professor saying "are you ready kids?" and one kid bursting out AYE AYE CAPTAIN is kind of funny.

But it's also really obnoxious in the way that cliquey teenagers and kids go out of their way to be? It's just a fandom-relatable version of "my clique has an inside joke and we're NEVER going to tell you dumb losers what it is", and literally nobody likes that kind of immature behavior except the people in said cliques.
