It's a bit frustrating. There's a lot of good visual novels out there, but I get tired of high school hijinks and the focus on high school. Which unfortunately is the most common setting. Even if there's supernatural or fantasy elements, they will still manage to shoehorn it into a highschool setting.

You know how in the US they say "high school is the best years of your life" but it's not true? In Japan, it actually is. Everything sucks after high school. Everything. That's why they always have young people in their media -- it's because that's when all the good things happened, before their souls were sucked out of them by a university and work culture that literally drives people to suicide.

That is actually a really good point that I was already kind of familiar with Japanese culture, but forgot about how strong it is until you mentioned it like that. :o

I know it makes sense for the home country's demographic (while also at the same time assuming that western fans of otome games are familiar with genre conventions [so that way they can subvert the heck out of them with the protag]), but still it takes me out of the zone whenever I'm getting skeeved out by what are supposed to be the most romantic moments of the game.

Everything is perfect until I see adult characters reciprocate a kiss by a high schooler. D:

I'm fully aware of that. And while I know that defaulting to high school settings is their default setting for escapism, I really wish that there was a bit more variety.
