I think a part of it is also just not understanding how attraction works, but having this preconceived notion that all women are shallow and are only attracted to young, hot guys. Er, no. That's something lonely men tell themselves in order to feel better about their lack of a love life.

Not really.

It's not insane to note that one of the main dynamics in fandom for new Who has been concerned with romance generally and the Doctor as a romantic / sexual figure. And I don't think it's insane to say that Capaldi is less conventionally attractive than Smith or Tennant.

Now, the conclusions that Neckbeards On The Internet come to using those things are completely farkakta, and the reasons they come to those conclusions probably do have a lot to do with their own personal issues. But I don't think it's absurd to think that Capaldi is going to be less of a sexual figure than Smith or Tennant were, even if interviews and press hadn't reinforced that notion. That's not the part where they're crazy. Thinking that all women have the same taste, and that's the only reason any female fans watch, and that female fans are awful and somehow make the show worse - those are the parts where they're crazy.

I really don't think Smith is "conventionally" attractive. Tennant maybe a little bit so.

But if we're talking about comparatively?

Tennant more so, I'd say, definitely.

I think it's more likely that so many men (both young and old) believe this because they're only attracted to young, hot women, and they don't understand how it's even possible to find an older person of the opposite sex attractive.

+1 I'm always suspicious when guys go on and on about how shallow women are and how they only date rich guys who look like Ryan Gosling. Yeeeeahhh, not only is that not true, but it says volumes about projection. IME, men are far more likely to be shallow about looks. It's why you frequently see hot woman/average to fugly dudes and rarely hot guys/average to fugly women.

I had the biggest crush on Vincent D'Onofrio when he was on Criminal Intent and had a few pictures up in my work station when I was about 22. The other women at work were all "Yeah, he's so sexy!" and the guys were just "Him? Really? He's old. And ugly."

So yeah, I understand (and I think Capaldi is pretty sexy).

Vincent D'Onofrio is sexy as hell. It didn't hurt that he was playing a highly intelligent character, I always find intelligence to be a major component of whether or not I'm attracted to someone.
