It's very active among rpers, and that's where most of the wank comes from.

In summary, you have:

- Strict Canon Weyrs, where everything is 100% canon no exceptions, even if it means that you're carrying on the author's really backward ideas about women, homosexuals, and rape.

- Semi or Non Canon Weyrs, where they love the setting but not all the weird restrictions on people who aren't straight men, so they change things up. Usually this means things like no restrictions by gender or sexuality for dragon impression, new dragon colours, and a lot more queer/womenfolk being rad.

- Annnnd the Fetish Weyrs. Where they take the strict canon weirdness and dial it up to eleven in the most disturbing and usually sexual ways possible, but get angry at you if you point out that it's pretty fetish-y because it's JUST NOT, OKAY.


As you can imagine, these three interpretations of Pern rarely get on. Most of the wank I've seen tends to come from bigotry or creepiness from canon/fetish weyrs. (bad_rpers_suck on LJ has a Pern tag if you want to see some of the wank.)

Yesss BRPS has the best Pern wank. Most of it is an eleven or at least a solid eight on a scale of one to what the fuck. It gets even better when you realize how much of the drama is over not getting the right color of imaginary dragon.

I actually had someone hand me a bunch of stuff from a semi-canon Weyr (all the usual dragon colors but no OH GODS NO THE WIMMENS CAN'T IMPRESS A BROWN OR BRONZE or homophobia), and it was...actually really good! I was like, "I would actually read this if it were a novel."
