I think Sin pretty much does whatever the hell it wants to do. I mean, who's going to say no to a huge ball of evil and doom?

Or that she'd make him famous. She'd make people love him and respect him. (I think Seifer's a classic case of a kid who needed a lot of attention and tried to demand it by obnoxious behaviour, but who never got what he wanted and then spiralled out of control).

I sure as hell wouldn't argue with a giant ball of evil and doom.

That too, it was like his Romantic Dream^2. And I got the same impression, he's an attention whore and will do anything to get it, if he can't get it through a positive means he'll be a jackass until he gets it!

And at one point, everybody just started expecting him to be a jackass and then of course he's stuck in that role.
I think that might be one of the reasons he might have dated Rinoa. She didn't know him as a jackass so it may have been a chance for him to not have to act like one.

Mmyep, it's what he was known for so hell why change it eh? And that is a good point, he could be himself with her rather than what he was "supposed" to be around Garden. Hell even the Instructors and various staff expected him to be a loser and an ass. Xu sure as hell wasn't helping matters any.

Argh, argh, argh, I hate Xu just for that. It's so. Fuck, I don't have words for it. D:
He's trapped in a pattern and she just goes and makes it worse and she's supposed to be a teacher?

Exactly! I mean hell the first time he failed had to be awful for him, rubbing it in and acting like that's all he is? Then yeah he's going to not even bother trying if that's all he's going to get! Or he's going to try too hard and screw it up by playing hero.

Absolutely right. And I still think he should've past, at least in the exam we get to see. Independent thought should be rated so much higher than neatly following orders, but no, they go and fail him on preconceived notions of his behaviour. DD:

Yep, and not following orders to the "T". Which, if you think about it is stupid. SeeD work in small groups on very strange missions with little to no communication with their base, they have to be able to make decisions on their own to figure out what the best course of action is!

My thoughts exactly. Besides, it's hard to deny the fact that when he wants to, Seifer has charisma. I think he could even be pretty damn charming. That sort of person makes a wonderful leader. I swear, a little more positive attention and he'd be awesome.

Oh hell yes, and all things considered he was right about the communication tower, and in any other situation it would have been a good idea to go check it out.

But hell if Xu (and the rest of the higher ups) will admit that they were wrong and the problem child was right.
I think it's interesting how this paints Garden as a place with inherent flaws. It's not perfect mercenary high school either.

Which is an interesting spin on the thing, part of why I liked FF8 was the flaws even in the "good guys" system were there, characters and places were a little more real.

And that's why I like it so much. Lots of people don't get that. They write it off as the game with the emo kid. ;_;

You know, he always strikes me as a well read person.

Noooes no emo kids ;_; granted my Seifer got a little annoyingly emo. But it was all internal and turned into angry and some self-loathing. This was post-game and he felt like shit about what he did.

Smart definitely, scary smart sometimes. But hmm, I never thought of him that way. Now I am intrigued. I did think he liked to read, but for me it was always fairytales, knights save princesses and whatnot you know?

And that's the big difference right there. Emo is whiny and generally based on nothing. Seifer's... got issues.

Ooh, that sounds great and so plausible. He had to get the dreams somewhere, after all.

A whole hell of a lot of them.

Yes! Working with one of the other muns we came up with a whole backstory about when they were kids at the orphanage, of the few times when Seifer was actually calm and quiet was when Matron would read to them. So he loved it and tried to hold onto that, he's just too proud to let anyone know about it.

I think he'd have lots of little secrets like that. Softer sides or sides that could be perceived as weaker that he keeps to himself almost paranoid like.

Oh hell yes, never ever show anything that could possibly be seen as "weak". Even if no one would ever think that way. I think part of his asshole demeanor was a sort of protective bubble, who wants to get close to the guy who's about as friendly as a cactus right?

I have cacti and I'm pretty friendly with them. >> XD

But yes, absolutely. Don't show them you're weak, don't show them you care about anything in particular and they won't be able to get to you (which is paranoid, again).

Very paranoid! No one can hurt you that way! Not that I'm entirely certain if that was the reasoning behind it or if it's just general paranoia. Perhaps some abandonment issues, hell he was in an orphanage that had to be bad enough. Couldn't get adopted, most of his "friends" leaving even if he wasn't very pleasant to them even when he was little.

What? They're totally cute!

I think if you live in an environment where you're trained to kill people, some paranoia is healthy.
But yes, abandonment issues could be it too. And the friends leaving, well that's what we said earlier. He can't get the attention he wants, so he's a jerk, they end up leaving and he's left alone and wishing they'd been his friends (and perhaps not even understanding why they didn't want to be his friends).

Yeah no kidding, take an orphan who can't make friends easy, didn't get adopted while almost everyone else did (except Squall), and train him into being a killer. He's going to be paranoid and probably a little unstable anyway. Fujin and Raijin were probably very important to keeping him as sane as possible being his only friends and all. Who put up with him despite the asshattery.

I don't think he was ever really an ass to either of them. Sure, there may have been the occasional remark when Raijin did something not too bright, but I think they accepted him for who he was and that defeated the point of being a jerk.
Besides, Fujin wouldn't put up with it.

I don't think he'd feel the need to after a while, and you're right Fujin would just kick him in the shin and make him shut up. Occasional snark, maybe not outwardly affectionate (lolz that would be odd) but friendly enough, and treat them as equals.

We could always switch to IM. ^^;

He'd be affectionate in a Seifer kind of way. That being treating them as equals, like you said, or doing little favours no one else would notice (like he gets dessert at the cafeteria but then pretends he doesn't like it/want it anymore, so he gives it to Raijin if he was too late to get one).
