There are people in fandom, but fandom is not people. Not liking yaoi doesn't equivilate to not liking gay people or homosexuality.

No, but as [livejournal.com profile] harukami said earlier on this page, it's not fair to say that you have to use a fandom example to counter a fandom example simply because there's so much het in real life that you could see fandom as a backlash against that. Possibly the commenter should have used the example of heterosexuals on TV rather than on the bus, but the point stands.

Possibly the commenter should have used the example of heterosexuals on TV

exactly.

or in the movies or in mainstream books...there's more to this thing than just fanfiction. movies that forcefeed heterosexual romances in the middle of an action movie? that's not 'real life'. that doesn't involve 'real people' and yet we are bombarded with these images EVERY SINGLE DAY.

people take fanfiction faaaar too seriously.

But my argument is specifically about fandom. Fandom is not srs bizness. Homosexuality and homophobia are real problems. The two should not, nor should they ever, be compared.

Re: 27

and my argument is about fiction in general and the proliferation of heterosexuality in printed media, in the movies, in commercials, in TV, which, by the way, are the basis of what makes up fandom to begin with.

bitch all you want about the abundance of wincest (as a m/m issue example. incest aside for just a moment) but the fact of the matter is, when Dean deep dicks someone in the series, it's female. so in the 'beloved source', there it is, all that fictional heterosexuality in my face. in my fandom.

isn't that what we are talking about? fandom?

yes! just like racism or misogyny!

...ohwait...

But they can, maybe even should be, because if someone is looking for glbt characters or homosexual interactions in every other popular media except fanworks, they're in the same position you're in trying to find het in the fandom. Sure, you can find the het if you know the author/fic names in advance, or you might strike it lucky. However, the other entertainment media that people use to relax with? Books? TV? Movies? Music? No, chances are, if you find any sort of pairing in any of these (and you usually will), it'll be het. Looking at ways people entertain themselves via media rather than "fandom vs rl", het is everywhere. Fandom is the one place where those of us who want some non-heteronormative presence to identify with can easily find it.

Books? Predominantly heteronormative. Movies? TV? Music? Predominantly heteronormative. Fanfiction and fanart? A good amount of yaoi, a fair amount of het, a small amount of yuri.

Yeah, you can resent that it's so hard for you to find heteronormative pairings in fanfiction without wading through things you don't identify with or want to read, but I don't think that's actually fair of you to do, given how it's the one entertainment media that we don't have to wade through things we don't identify with etc likewise. Again! Nobody's stopping you from resenting it. But I think that's still damn unfair and petty of you in the grand scheme of entertainment and leisure activity, especially given that the fandoms itself that you're looking for fics for? Almost certainly provide you with the heteronormative relationships you'd crave.

You're always so logical! They never respond to you because you lay it out so damn well. ♥

Thank you ;; I mean, I'm not trying to shut her up, I'm just... hoping she'll understand it from the opposite perspective. Just because, if she's annoyed with having to deal with the hassle in one entertainment media, I can't imagine she'd be happy having to deal with it in all but one entertainment media, so I'm hoping she'll understand that and. Well. See where I'm coming from on the fair/unfair angle of that.
