Any time I see something about this show (?), I keep misreading it as "Hateful Boyfriend" which just sounds really unpleasant.

Lmao, I do too. (Though I think it's a game/interactive novel type thing where you date guys that can turn into pigeons. It sounds... Interesting.)

They don't turn into pigeons, they are pigeons. (There is official humanized art, though.)

Omg, idek how to respond to that. I'm cracking up imagining a pigeon flirting with a human. Don't these kind of games usually have sex scenes though? Geez, I don't even want to know how that works...

Hahaha, I feel somewhat relieved, but I'm sure there's someone out there who is disappointed. Now I kind of want to watch a walkthrough of this; I still can't really imagine what it's like. So much crack.

Holy shit, so the game uses pictures of actual pigeons?! I at least thought the pigeons were going to be drawn, maybe in unusual colors, maybe even given cool anime clothes, but it looks like they just photoshopped actual pigeons into the game.

... This is maybe the funniest thing I've ever seen. There's a fucking birdwatching club at a school for pigeons, whaaat?! Why is a human going there? Why is this one white pigeon such a dick? (I'm imagining him with a posh British accent.)

When each pigeon is introduced in the game, they're initially shown with a companion portrait that portrays them as bishi anime dudes (ex: http://img3.lln.crunchyroll.com/i/spire1/27dd691184dfad3fad59521763ea236a1312700719_full.png), but it's only seen in their introduction and the remainder of the game uses the actual pigeon photos

You're close. It's a play on "heartful" and "hurtful," which doesn't really make sense until you get through all the endings and the "bonus" story.
