Pleasant Things That Your Kid Self Didn't See Coming

We all have these ideas about what we'll be once we hit puberty or just "grow up" (whenever that happens, if it does). Instead of dwelling on our shattered dreams, what would you tell your younger self about you now that would blow mini-you's mind with its impossibility?

Me, I would tell my younger self, "You aren't actually a scaredy-cat. You like horror and roller coasters, and public speaking. Just because everyone said it doesn't make it true.

"Also, while you did not grow tall, you do in fact have a pretty spectacular pair of tits for your size. Planning ahead for the boob job you were sure you were going to need was kind of off the mark."

"Remember what that teacher said about you being incapable of intelligence? You're going to get a master's degree. Forget being a massage therapist, SCIENCE awaits you. And you will also learn to draw. Just don't be in denial about your disability, learn about it and discover the positive aspect."

"You can do public speaking. You'll work past your panic attacks and get there, and you'll do presentations about your field without problems."

It was kind of a big deal for me. I turned down valedictorian in high school because I didn't want to make a speech. :/

No matter how much you worry about becoming like the grownups around you, not everyone who grows up becomes obsessed with sex. You still think it's weird and kind of silly, and that's okay.

Yo, younger me. In the early 21st century, you become an extrovert and become interested in other people instead of trying to push them away. This has the side effect of making you interesting and well-liked. Also you start dressing really well.

If you wanted to start any of that, y'know, earlier... that'd be good too.

I'd tell younger!me, "you're more likable than you know, you're actually worth people's best efforts, and don't be ashamed that dad's an alcoholic shithead, you're not the only one and your feelings are perfectly normal."

I'd also tell her, "move just a little bit south of here and be patient for as long as it takes, he's waiting for you."

Your body won't change that much but you will, and eventually you'll like yourself and how you look.

Your mom will actually turn out to be an admirable person once you're able to admire her from a safe distance.

You might not be the performer you meant to be, but you'll be a performer in a crazy ass delightful setting, one you probably couldn't have imagined.

Also, life doesn't end at 25. Get that shit out of your mind, little girl. Ignore the stupid rules and fickleness of Hollywood and MTV and mainstream anything. If you love something, go for it. And don't stop going for it just because everyone says you've hit a certain age and have to "grow up" as if being "grown up" means you have to stop dreaming, and throw away everything that makes you happy. Look forward to getting older.

You won't be this shy forever, Mini Me. Also your boobs will always be small but you'll be fine with it as you age.

You're going to lose your faith for a while. A long while. Don't look at me like that, and don't say you won't ever, never, ever, because I'M YOU, get it? Yes, it's a choice, but terrible things are going to happen to you that will make it seem like you have no choice. For a while, you actually won't have any choice, but it gets better. It gets worse, first, though.

Oh, and do me one favour, kid? I'm not going to tell you to stay away from the lying hypocrites who are going to hurt you (that's the "it gets worse" bit), but they WILL have all their dirty little tricks come to light. And it's not up to YOU to do that, vengeance is NOT yours. You say you know that now, but it will be hard to keep that in mind, during the worst of it.

You have to go through all of this, see, in order to get your faith BACK. Hard-won faith is worth more than all the treasures man can assign value to, kid. Right now you think you're so great and so special, and sure, you are, but you're not THAT special. There's a two-by-four jammed into your pupil, little one, and a lot of what you're going to go through is what is involved in having it surgically extracted. Without anesthetic.

It's going to hurt. A lot. It's going to suck. Bad things are going to happen. Your easy life will disappear like a soap bubble in the sun. But it gets better. Promise.

"You will have lots of friends when you're an adult. Those kids you're stuck in school with now don't appreciate you because they're idiots, and your parents don't really understand you or your situation."
