Kind of a silly health question...

How do you tell if you're bloated or if you've just gained weight?

Recently I've noticed my stomach sticking out unnaturally. There isn't any pain, or even much discomfort--it just feels and looks strange. As I've been quite skinny all my life (regardless of diet or exercise), I'm not sure if this is something to be concerned about or not.

Could it be some kind of food allergy? I'm thinking it's either that or my birth control, since I'm using a new kind... but I started the BC pills three weeks ago, so shouldn't I have noticed that earlier?

I don't know. I don't know if this is something worth going to a doctor over or if I should just wait and see if it goes away. What do you think?

There are a lot of reasons that you could have a distended abdomen. People most commonly experience distention from excessive gas, but anything from a bacterial infection or an intestinal parasite to liver failure could cause an unusually swollen abdomen.

If your medication lists it as a severe side effect or if you have any jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) then seek medical attention immediately.

If not, well, it's probably just gas.

Could be the BC as you suspect... maybe a slow-acting side effect?

TMI, but do you ever feel constipated?

If not, have you had issues with hernias?

Also, could be posture?

If you're bloated, try eating foods that are anti-bloat. Cut down on sodium and/or eat more potassium-rich foods. Eat watery foods like cucumber. Stay away from artificial sweeteners and carbonated beverages, because those can add gas to the belly.

I think it might be okay to wait to see what happens, but not more than a few days.

Maybe you're retaining water?

Well... it's something to keep an eye on, but what's more important is if it comes with any other side effects. Pain? Gas? Tenderness in the distended area? Nausea? Um... irregular or unusual bowel movements? Fever? How long have you had it?

If you're going to make an appointment with a doctor for anything else, it's worth a mention. I'd say that unless it comes with other symptoms, I'd wait and keep an eye on it, but I'm not a doctor.
