Character A thinking that Character B is a good person is a very poor argument for Character B actually being a good person.

Given Harry's relationship with Snape it isn't. Context is everything.

No, it still is, because Harry is still human, and as such has flaws and biases. Harry may personally view Snape as being a good person due to Snape's final actions and in spite of Snape's treatment of him, but that does not mean that Snape was actually a good person. Characters (and people, for that matter) should be judged according to their behavior, not according to how others view them (even if one of those others happens to be the POV character).

It also should be said that characters generally aren't wholly good or wholly bad. A character who is a bad person can still do good things, and a character who is a good person can still do bad things.

I'm not sure I agree with you.

Because Harry's the big damn hero and most of the story is from his perspective. And although Harry has made some poor decisions, I think the argument could be made that, in the end, the narrative supports his judgment. Even if I don't think Snape is all that good a person, I don't think it's a poor argument.
