I've already responded to the same point multiple times already. You're viewing his arc from a very cynical frame of mind as opposed to what Rowling intended.

You still aren't trying. Come on, we know that the author's intentions aren't the be-all end-all when it comes to interpreting a work. People make whole dissertations out of analyzing a work from different perspectives

But Rowling doesn't think he's a hero or anything like that. She flat out says that he's still a spiteful bully. She concedes that he's brave, but it's obvious she thinks there's a difference between being a good person and being brave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBLqWffUSWI

I like how she doesn't even try to sugar coat it for the eight year olds or talk down to him. She's basically just like "yeah, he absolutely wouldn't have protected any child unrelated to Lily. Sorry kids". I respect that
