I'm really nervous about my class tomorrow, as it's with a teacher I've never even met (which didn't used to be uncommon, but ever since I locked in a major, it is). ratemyprofessors.com says she's nice and the class is really easy, but what if she's not nice and the class isn't easy? I have such bad anxiety problems, and sometimes teachers really bring those out for one reason or another, even when reviews imply that they're likely to be understanding, accommodating sorts.

It doesn't help that I read a creepy story about a student who can see lifespans and realized their teacher was about to kill them and the entire class. I don't think that'll be the case (and if it does, at least I won't have that horrible dread of knowing it's going to happen), but the story hit my "while I can't describe it in words, this is the kind of writing and/or concept that really creeps me out" button.

Don't run to borrow trouble, it's like the girl in the story whose young man comes to meet her parents, and her father sends her down cellar to get a pot of beer. And as she's waiting for the pot to fill up, she sees this big old axe hanging on the wall, and she thinks "What if one day my sweetie marries me and comes to live here, and we have a little son, and one day when he's big enough, we send him down cellar for a pot of beer, and that big old axe falls down off the wall and hits him on the head and kills him dead!" And she's so upset by the thought that she sits there crying into her apron until the beer overflows the pot and laps up over her shoes.

So presently her father says to her mother, "Go see what's keeping our girl," so the mother goes down cellar and finds her daughter crying into her apron with the beer lapping up over her shoes. And the mother says "What on earth are you doing there?" so the girl tells her, "What if my sweetie marries me and comes to live here, and we have a little son, and one day when he's big enough, we send him down cellar for a pot of beer, and that big old axe falls down off the wall and kills him dead." And mom agrees that this is such a terrible thought that she sits down beside her daughter, and they both cry into their aprons until the beer comes up to their ankles.

So after they don't come up for a while, the father says to the young man, "I better go down cellar and see what's keeping them," and down he goes and finds his wife and daughter holding onto each other and crying into their aprons and up to their ankles in beer. "What are you doing?" he asks, and his wife tells him, between sobs, "What if our dear girl marries her sweetie, and he comes to live here, and they have a little son, and one day when he's big enough we send him down cellar for a pot of beer, and that big old axe falls down off the wall and kills him dead!" And the father agrees that this is a terrible thought, and he sits down beside his wife and daughter and they cry and cry until the beer comes up to their knees.

So the young man is left waiting for his girl and her parents. And he waits and he waits, and finally he he goes down cellar and there's his girl and her mother and father sitting and crying with the beer up to their knees, and he's like, "WTF?" And the girl says "Oh sweetie, I've had such a terrible thought, what if we should marry, and you come to live here, and we have a little son and one day when he's big enough we send him down cellar for a pot of beer and that big old axe falls down off the wall and kills him dead!"

And the young man wades through the beer to the keg and turns off the tap, and then he wades over to the wall and takes the axe down from where it's hanging and stands it in the corner. And he swears that he and the girl are through unless he can find three people as silly as she and her parents are.

But he does marry her in the end, so it all ends happily. And there's every chance your instructor will be as good as other students have found her, and as for her plotting to kill you all, the odds are severely against it.

Good luck in school, anon! And if someone sends you for beer, make sure to keep your eye on the tap.

Oh, and BTW, I thought of this story because I tend to do the same thing. But that kind of "what if?" never does any good, and usually it does a lot of harm, even if you don't end up wading in beer up to your knees. Your instructor could turn out to be not only very nice, but a real mentor to you. I hope everything turns out well.

I hope so too. I've had teachers I disliked, but only one who was so horrible that I couldn't finish the semester. I'm torn between thinking "well, that's over with for the rest of my school career" and "I'm due for another disaster any time now".

I'm sorry that happened to you--now and then one finds a teacher who is basically just a bully, or at least they turn into one when they scent the smallest vulnerability. But here you are, persevering. I think you're due for the success you have earned, anon--hope you have a great semester!

I wish could help you out. Suffering from anxiety sucks and I know how bad it can be. Have you tried doing anything to relax? Talked to any of her former students?

do you have a link to that story?

I've reread the good reviews a few times and vented my feelings. That's about what I've got until tomorrow. I'm going to talk to her before class and all I can do is hope she'll listen.

Found it for you: http://sixpenceee.com/post/96830798559/alien-anatomy-link-to-story-what-did-you-bring

Rereading those good reviews is a good start. :) I will keep my fingers crossed that goes well for you. Try to get plenty of rest if you can.

Thank you.

I think ratemyprofessor is useful if there's tons of reviews. When 200 students report the same thing, then there's probably some truth there.

but I only have like 5 reviews, one of whom is from a student who did very poorly in my class because he did like none of the work, and yet his review (and I can tell it was his from details in the review) is all about how awful I am.

So, I wouldn't rely on that site necessarily.

That being said, how would you feel about talking to your teacher in this first week about your anxiety. I know I really appreciate when students let me know something like that so that I can help them.
