This is gonna be rambly, I'm tired.

I write fanfiction with a truckload of OCs for a certain franchise. One develops a romantic relationship with an established character, albeit one who was written off the show several seasons ago, and has no incarnation in this franchise's games or comics. This character has zero backstory and is pretty one-dimensional; being his fan for so many years, I've built up a lot of headcanon and intertwined it with my OC's.

And I have wrestled with the idea of turning the whole thing into an original work, because I am well aware I'm doing myself negative favors by writing for Children's Merchandising Fandom. But it wouldn't feel the same to me. I want to work with This Guy and his one canon tie to Slightly More Important Guy. And I like the world, because there are important plot points, and creating my own universe would come across as an obvious rip-off of this famous franchise.

Basically: I'm having fun and practicing my writing. I'm not using a brand name for views. Very few care about OCs in this fandom. I don't mind. This is my hobby.

Do you enjoy yours? If so, keep writing and fuck the haters. If you're really concerned about it, take a hiatus and work it into an original story. Do what makes you happy.

*nod*

I feel you

In a fanfic of mine involves the canon characters being invited to an original setting a school for students with unusual gifts. During the beginning the canon main character meets up and gets back with his ex.

The best friend who liked him is sort of left to deal with her feelings about losing her chance with him. When she's feeling down and upset watching her friend (and crush) go out with his ex (someone she doesn't like) she ends up talking to the roommate of her friends, and planning an outing/date with him.

A drunk kiss happens and later she's left questioning if she's into the guy or she just sees so much of her crush in him. This also shakes up tensions with the main character his friend and the roommate she went on a date with.

The whole story will basically have her moving past her disappointment, and maybe getting to know roommate guy a little more as well, making peace with her friend's new girlfriend, and dealing with personal stuff going on with people at the school.

So.. I guess technically it involves OCxCanon. But it's still focused on the girl (the best friend) and from HER point of view dealing with her feelings.

If this makes some people skip the fic....eh whatever. Don't matter. I had lots of fun writing it with my co writer. I enjoy writing, and put it up for people to enjoy.

I'm not seeking to do anything dishonest. It's a hobby.

Thank you.

SA

You're welcome. :) If you like it, good. If someone else likes it, even better. People are getting way too worked up thinking we're all out to capitalize off Twilight. I came to AO3 to have a good time and honestly I'm feeling so attacked right now

Thanks

Yeaaah. I don't even really like Search and Replace/File Off the Serial Numbers type editing.

But... honestly? It's not a big emergency if someone does it. One crappy book isn't going to kill Literature. Literature has seen MANY crappy books.

And also..what do people who read a fic that was made into novel really LOSE anyway? So someone tried to make money off a crappy fic.

Big deal. *shrug* Probably happens a lot more and people end up failing I honestly think. Just the few that succeed get attention. and then some people assume everyone's doing it.
