Goodbye, my friend.

Earlier today, I had to have my twelve-year-old yellow lab, Mac, put to sleep due to cancer. We had made the decision to do so last Thursday, and the vet gave us meds to keep her comfortable over the weekend so that we could all say goodbye. I've had her since she was eight weeks old, when two ladies came to a car wash my youth group was holding, and had her in the car with them. Being the complete sucker I am for cuteness, I started gushing over her, and the women asked if I wanted her, as they only had her because they'd found her abandoned by the river. Obviously, I said yes, and took her straight home. Turns out, she had Parvo. She was a fighter, though (especially when it came to taking her meds...luckily I have a knack for giving recalcitrant animals their meds), and she made a fairly quick recovery. She ended up being the most loving, smart, fun, wonderful dog I've ever had, and I consider myself lucky to have had so much time with her, and that I was able to give her a happy, comfortable life and a peaceful end. Doesn't make it any easier, though. It feels so wrong not having her at my feet, grunting like a zombie as she chews her rawhide bones and occasionally trying to bite Pippin (one of my other dogs. He means well, but he's kind of a stupid pest, especially to her) whenever he tries to steal her chewies.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any cute pet stories/pics to share, 'cause I could use some happy right about now.

Ohh no, I'm so sorry! It sounds like she lived a really good, full life. And at least she got some meds for the weekend.

The cutest thing I have to share is a routine around my house. My little black kitty was on the porch so I stepped out to pet him. He loves his backside petted and raises his butt way up. And if you talk to him enthusiastically while petting, he'll squeak in response. He can't meow. He squeaks. It is so freakin' adorable even after we've had him for 8 years.

Aaaw, squeaky kitties are the best! What a little sweetie!

And thank you. She was a happy dog (except when Pippin was being annoying) and I'm glad I could give her the life she deserved.

Boy do I

So my brother has this dog named Wiley. He was an only puppy and thus kind of obnoxious to other dogs so he was given to my brother (he was our dog Lucy's last puppy) because he did better as a single dog.

So one weekend I came to my brother's place to stay. He makes burgers. I made my own burger and place it on the table for a moment and then turned to get macaroni and talk to my brother.

The moment I turned my back, Wiley jumped up and stole the top patty of my burger.

...I still ate the remainder. You don't waste a good burger like that.

Also *hugs if wanted* I'm so sorry about that

Damn right you don't waste that burger. Wiley sounds like he was well-named, the silly boy! Gotta love dogs with that much personality.

Also, thank you.

You're welcome. I hope you feel better.

My ten-year-old sheltie is a grump. She is seriously the grumpiest dog EVER, acts way more like a cat than a dog. She has a facial expression permanently like the one Buffy has in my icon. And she usually acts like she hates my six-year-old male border collie and she obviously thinks he's a total moron. She grumbles at him if he runs too close by when she's sleeping, pointedly leaves the room if he gets playful, and joins in barking accusingly at him whenever we scold him, etc. But if any OTHER dog ever barks at him or scares him, she will run that fucker down no matter how big the other dog is. Nobody gets to yell at him except her.

And also, she becomes super affectionate and friendly and frisky and puppy-ish towards everyone for an hour or so right after she gets a bath. That's the only time she will drop the grumpy thing and act undignified. With all dogs at all other times, she acts like she doesn't know what a play-bow is and just sort of stares at them coolly like she would be raising a Spock-eyebrow at something inexplicable and illogical if she had proper eyebrows, but she totally actually does know what a play-bow is because she always does them to our border collie after her bath.

Also, nowadays she always behaves like she's ~so oooolllldd~ and frail and pretends like we need to be patient with her or not throw the ball too far for her and stuff, but it's a lie -- if you take her to the beach, she will chase the waves breaking on the shore like they're sheep for ages without tiring -- running up and down and up and down the beach and barking instructively at every turn, like she's totally convinced that she's the ONLY THING stopping the waves from keeping coming all the way up the beach and flooding everything.

She sounds so damn awesome and hilarious! There's something so adorable about grumpy little dogs, like they have Short Man's Syndrome or something 'cause they're trying so hard to act like they're bigger and less cute than they actually are.

awww, I'm so sorry. *hugs*

We lost our oldest dog (also to cancer) about a month ago.

Here is a picture of her chewing a rawhide when she was much younger, which is one of my favorite pics of her and is adorable:

I'm sorry for your loss as well. That really is a great picture! I love her expression and the way she's holding on so tightly to it with her paws. She's going after it like it's her job.

Aw, thank you. We had a long time to prepare for it and I do love celebrating her life.

I love it too. The paw is the best part!
