University rant

(Anonymous) 2014-09-09 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in an advanced fiction workshop and I've taken this professor before and I liked him last time and he praised my work pretty highly but this time, it drives me absolutely crazy because he has kind of terrible taste. Like, he acts like any piece of shit published in a high end magazine is art, people should only write characters like themselves (as in, if you're a white male, you shouldn't write a black character or a female character). And then he gave this really wonderful story by a classmate a god damn 77%. This really pisses me off because he gave this other story, an absolute pile of shit, this rave fucking review. Even if he gives me good reviews on my work, it's not enough to negate his awful taste and his opinions that I seriously don't fucking agree with. I mean, Junot Diaz says that writers shouldn't stay in their comfort zone and they should practice writing characters who aren't like you because it's the only way you'll actually get better. Like this guy is a better writer than Junot Diaz. I'm so fucking done.

I had a creative writing professor a bit like that. She only found any value in incredibly pretentious bleak ~ambiguous~ bullshit stories written by pretentious writers so in love with their own prose and narrative style that they totally forgot to put stuff like...oh I don't know, a plot? Characterization? Humor? A point? An ending? into any of their stories. And humor? Sincerity? God forbid. Humorous or straightforward stories were worthless trash to her. Ugh. I was at the point where I literally could not bear to read any more of the assigned stories in the syllabus by the middle of the semester without feeling this column of white-hot rage rising inside me screaming "omg shut up shut up do you really think anyone thinks these insipid self-absorbed thoughts are worth hearing?" at every single writer. Her taste was just that uniformly and unerringly bad.

Thank God it's not just me. I just don't know what I saw in him last semester. But, yes yes yes, most of the stories we read are these self indulgent stream of bullshit and, even worse, a lot of them are so "author insert."

Well, I guess it makes sense that they're "author insert" stories, since this idiot apparently believes that's the only acceptable way to write.

So now that you've discovered that he has terrible taste, how do you feel about his praise of your last semester's work?

Not that great, I gotta tell you.

Hi-five, I am also taking advanced fiction right now!

Do you still have time to withdraw and retake it with another professor? You might be able to run it by your advisor. Also if the professors at your school are published, you can look them up and read their writing (and their blog, twitter, etc.)

I can't withdraw for reasons it'd take a while to explain here so I'll just have to stick it out. Thanks for hearing me out and giving some advice though.

That's a problem with classes in the arts because things are so subjective. It's the reason my mother gives for having gone into mathematics, because if she got the right answer on a math problem, she was objectively correct and it didn't matter if the professor liked it or not. She much preferred artistic endeavors, but she got tired of teachers who told her she had to write/paint/whatever a certain way and that was what "real" art was and if she did something else it was wrong.

If it were me, I'd probably just tailor everything I did for the class to the professor's tastes and then write a bunch of fanfic or something on the side to practice other ways of writing.
