OMG so much of this is just like me.

I write in Harry Potter and Danny Phantom mostly. My works are up on A03 and ff.net.

I honestly am one of those oddballs who'll feel like she's really "made it" when people start writing fanfic of my stories.

Yessss so true. I honestly want fanfic as much as financial success because I'll always have stuff to read.

I am a part of two RPs called Portal Breach and Novarus and most of us a re a big community OOC as well as IC. PB has gone for like 4 years and Novarus recently had its one year Anniversary.

They can indeed. I honestly see a lot of canon characters get treated like Mary Sues in fanfiction honestly so IMO its just a bad writing thing mis-attributed to to OCs.

On the not overshadowing front, in one of my stories I spent a lot of time working on and thinking about headcanons for canon characters and studying them to get them and I made goals for the fic , like having it do things with canon characters and their relationships with each other that I would have loved to see in canon. So before I started writing I had some excitement about writing the canon stuff and I didn't let the OC stuff take over. Also in the story , most of the canons' interactions with OCs serve as a foil.

EX: The canon villain has a business deal with this lady (an OC) and throughout the story he sees his vices and bad qualities reflected in her, and even though she's worse , it makes him realize how bad he got and through that he has a genuine change of heart and works to really overcome the flaws. The OC was his flaws and negative attitudes reflected and taken creepily farther.
