Semi Based on 1

If you choose to distance yourself from liking a famous person because of their actions, do you still engage in their work if you're legitimately interested in everything but them?

Florence Welch did a photo shoot with Terry Richardsom - king of sleaze. I almost turned my back on her but couldn't quite do it.

That is disappointing.

Yes.

For example, Mel Gibson is a dick but, man, can he direct. I wish he would do more films.

Well, depends on the quality of work.

I'd been distancing myself (in a way) from the Goo Goo Dolls because Magnetic turned out to be the complete opposite of its album name. The drummer thing made me less inclined to check up on what they're doing now (though to be fair, I still don't know what sparked the decision).

Not always, but sometimes. Occasionally I'll still listen to Megadeth's Rust in Peace album.

You can't pay me to watch anything Roman Polanski or read anything Orson Scott Card ever did, though.

Depends on whether they (or anyone close to them) is likely to ever see it and care, and on how personal the objection I have is. (Picking an example of a famous person at random here) Beyonce? No one connected to her is ever gonna see me jamming out to ***FLAWLESS and call me a hypocrite for saying I didn't support her, I don't know, eating a burger that one time and yet listening to her music anyway. On the other hand, that BNF I got into a dust-up with about their claim that Loki is just sad and misunderstood and it's actually Thor's fault that eighty people died because he wasn't nice enough to his brother? Yeah, I'm never reblogging their art again.

It depends! Shitty politics are a lot easier for me to overlook than direct harmful action, though it changes if the politics get REALLY shitty. It depends on the action and how much I like their work, and sometimes whether it's been hundreds of years since they last did a thing.

I'm really disappointed in Melville and Whitman for distancing themselves from the abolitionist movement, for example, but I appreciate a lot of other aspects of their writing and its engagement with their present, so I bite my tongue sometimes.

On the other hand, I can't take a damn thing Thomas Jefferson writes about freedom seriously, and I don't care how long it's been. All stirring Thomas Jefferson quotes are forever accompanied in my mind by a giant frowny face in parentheses. >:(

Rihanna and Miley Cyrus mess up a lot, but that's what your twenties are for. Either they'll relax eventually, or not.

Sean Penn, though? Fuck that guy. Woody Allen? No. Just no.

Rarely, to be quite honest. It depends on who are the other people involved, then I might be able to ignore the person I don't want to see.
