A fic question

(Anonymous) 2014-09-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If you've only written "happy fic" for a particular fandom, and your next fic is not going to have a happy ending, would you warn readers at the start? Or would you not, lest it ruin the effect?

Related: do you give any thought at all to readers developing expectations around the kind of fic you write?

Just tag it appropriately, maybe a note that says "this is a bit darker than most of my other fics"

Just tag it as a dark fic, anything else is a spoiler. You don't want to spoiler your readers before you start.

I'd go with what the others have suggested and just mention that it's darker than the other fics you've written.

I usually tag unhappy ending if there's gonna be one. Or at least dark-fic, angst, whatever. Both to warn people who just aren't looking for that, and to let the people who are, and who have a hard time finding it in the happy-endings most fics get, know that there's something here they'd like.

I'd probably include a hint in the summary, just to try and weed out the people who might complain. Not because I think their complaint is valid, I'm just not interested in hearing people whinge about how they need to be warned for everything.

I try not to worry too much about reader expectation when writing, and just write the story the way I think it ought to be written. No great work of art was ever created via committee vote, and even a lowly fanfic doesn't benefit from an author trying to please everyone, IMO.

I wouldn't warn. Especially since the only time I write non-happy endings is when I'm writing to a prompt, and the promptee specifically requests a sad or bittersweet ending.

And for the related, yes, I do. I actually like that I usually become known as a Happily Ever After author. In fact, the few endings I've had that could go either way, I "warn" people if they like the way things are right now, don't read the epilogue. Because then I put the HEA in the Epilogue.

Life's too full of hardships and disappointments as it is. Writing is my escape. :)

I'm sort of known for writing darkish fic, and I'll throw in a warning about 'the usual'. And on the flipside, because I usually write darkish stuff, I'll throw in something to let them know it's a lighter fic than I usually write.

I tend to warn people that a fic will not have a happy ending, but I try not to specify what kind. That way it weeds out the people who only want fluff or are afraid of character death or whatever, while attracting/not spoiling people who are interested in the same kinds of trainwrecks I enjoy writing. ;)

I don't warn for endings, I warn for content that is potentially DO-NOT-WANT.

I'd warn readers. One time I had the displesure of reading a fic that started fine, and ended up with homophobic slurs mid-sex. Not cool, man.
