I have seen some fan art, and yeah he does look like the animated version of what I'm into.

Is the actual anime any good?

Yes! There are two animes, one that veers of from the manga and has it's own ending, and one that is much more faithful to the manga. They are both excellent, and I would whole-heartedly recommend both.

Hmmmm....

I'd have to say the first one. The second one rushes a bit over the first ten episodes, because that material's covered in the first 25 episodes of the first anime. You wouldn't miss anything by watching the second one first, but the first does cover the beginning in a bit more detail. (There's also a couple of filler episodes in the first anime at the very beginning, but they're fun.)

My personal favorite is the first anime, but I watched that one first, so I'm biased. The second one is just as good.

Also, this is one anime where I would highly recommend the dubs. FMA is largely considered one of the best dubs around. It's totally worth watching both subbed and dubbed.
