What sucks about your country?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I live in the U.S., and with our crappy healthcare, crappy education system, lack of gun control (all IMO), it's very easy to say "oh, wouldn't it be great to live in [European country]!" But of course I know it's not that simple. Then again, I've seen plenty of European flisters say they would hate to live in the U.S., so. So what sucks about your country? Would you move if it were simple and easy to do so, or would you stay with the problems you know? (Generally talking about first world countries here.)

In the US as well. Basically, our lack of social systems in general (or the minimalism of the few we have), or lack of understanding that structural inequalities are a real problem and that working to change those isn't a bad thing, our views on guns in general (not just the lack of gun control, but our whole culture surrounding guns). Our views on immigration and people from other countries, our immigration laws, and in general the way we view "outsiders."

And most of all our superiority complex, our belief that we're awesome on human rights and policies and everything and couldn't possibly learn anything from anyone else and can tell everyone else what to do, when the reality is so much different.

I wouldn't move mostly because I want to work to change those things. It won't happen in my lifetime, but I want to be part of the process of (hopeful) change.

Honestly that it's just bland. And that people here do not really seem to appreciate ambition like they do in some other places - it's the land of people who keep their head down.

I feel like in the US, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you're successful but work for a big company, you've given into the man and are now an evil corporate tool. If you don't get a good job, you're a bum wasting taxpayer money even if you're not actually doing anything to waste taxpayer money. And both mentalities are causing both extremes to grow hostile.

I realize it's not ideal in other places, either, it's just something that stands out to me (especially as my parents are not from here, so you do see different mentalities).

Eh, frankly the US treats my race like dirt...but then again so do 90% of countries on earth to be honest...I'd prefer to just go into space and never look back.

Mind if I join you? Let's go to Mars or something.

Do you mind if I ask what race you are? Sorry if that's an inappropriate question.

African American (I say that over black because there's even a...disconnect? Between us and people from the various countries of Africa. AKA lots of them try to distance themselves from us)

In the US also. I wouldn't mind living abroad for a year or so, but I don't think I could permanently leave the US. Mostly because of family, but change is never easy for me.

I'm still bitter about the higher education system where you have to beg for the opportunity to spend tens of thousands of dollars.

This is one of the best complaints, right here.

Our education system is so fucked up. :(

I have a lot of issues with the education system but this is one of the ones that makes me grumble louder than the rest. That along with some of the issues I hear from my mom who is a special education teacher.

But how well is society supposed to build all those prisons to hold people who often only turned to crime in the first place because they couldn't afford an education to get a decent job? /sarcasm

In all seriousness...as much as I know it would be catastrophic and for a while would make things worse, I also kind of can't wait for if/when education becomes the next major economic bubble - mostly because I think something new can finally be born from the ashes of that.

I sometimes have similar thoughts about wanting that bubble to burst. But really I'd like for the whole educational system from little children upwards to get an overhaul, right down to our attitudes toward education. It makes me sad to see learning go from something magical that kids love and do naturally to a necessary evil.

Canada? The electoral system. Our current government was not only put into power but given a majority of the seats while getting less than 40% of the vote. Meaning over 60% of the population doesn't want them, but they're there anyway making policies the vast majority of people don't agree with.

Japan? The respect for the elderly is wonderful in some ways, but it also means that the most common means of affecting social change is "wait for the old people to die". When everyone in your society under 70 feels a certain way, or knows a change is needed, but it doesn't happen because you're not allowed to speak out against that 70+ cohort and your only other option is to leave the country, something is extremely wrong. Those people grew up in a different time and are using that no-longer-relevant life experience on which to base their values and ideals. Worse, they no longer have a stake in the future of society the same way a present-day young or even middle-aged person does.

Sounds like an extreme version of what happens in the U.S. Politicians don't want to upset older constituents too much because the older ones are more likely to actually vote. :|
ariakas: (Default)

Re: What sucks about your country?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-09-11 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's even worse than that, though, because while if they were pandering only to the elderly no US politician would ever back something like, say, gay marriage, even though the majority of younger people support it now. But they don't want to lose future voters, and middle aged people vote in large numbers too.

But the views on gay marriage in Japan amongst the younger generations are not actually that dissimilar to that of the West, yet there's absolutely no traction being made on the issue whatsoever and most politicians would never even dream of bringing it up because it's unacceptable to the elderly.

I live in the U.S. and I'm sick of bible thumpers and people defining everybody by their job and how much money they make.

Our education system is going down the shitter, I really feel sorry for kids in school atm because they are getting fucked over by a government that doesn't care about teaching them but hitting exam targets so that they can win some kind of international pissing contest(which we're loosing anyway).

The fact that foreigners are blamed for everything wrong with my country, when nope, we're fucking it up by ourselves thank you, also stop listening to the Daily Mail ffs.

All that being said no country is without it's flaws and I don't think there is a single country that's got everything figured out perfectly anyway.

It's a third-world country. Y'know, with low levels of education, high crime rates and a huge breach between the rich and the poor that gets bigger every day. Same old, same old.

At the moment, I think we are being cowards and are buckling under the status quo instead of going for independence.

I wish David Cameron would realise that the way to boost the 'No' vote would be to resign immediately along with his cabinet of corrupt soulless bastards. Then, no matter what happens, its a win-win scenario.

Good luck with the vote on Monday!
