[excuse anon posting, I'm not logged in on this machine]

"Lane" just sounded like it could be Asian (Korean, Chinese maybe?) to me. Possibly I'm influenced by Lane Kim from Gilmore Girls? I've never thought that deeply about it, tbh. But Lane Kim + a simple one syllable name + Jane and Trent's design all just melded together into "possibly Asian" for me.

Well, according to http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Lane

Lane is from English, French or Irish. So they aren't necessarily white, because they could be Black Irish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_people#Black_Irish (note this is not the same as Black-Irish which is African American, only for Irish people).

And if you all thought I was trolling, then shame on you for thinking Irish people only have a single ethnic group and it is gingers. Who's racist now?

Wait, what? I don't think anyone thought you were trolling. The black Irish was strong in my dad, for example.

Also, just because they have a European last name doesn't mean they're not Asian - just that at some point someone in their family married someone called Lane.

Also, Trent and Jane could be adopted, to throw another theory out there...

(I personally think Jane's blue eyes clearly indicate that the creators thought of her as white, but my personal interpretation of the series is that she and Trent are Asian)

People generally start accusing of racism and trolling when you mention that there are Irish ethnicities that aren't white. It goes back to the old "no dogs, no blacks, no Irish" thing. They forget that for the Black Irish, Irish Travellers, and the Red Irish, they were deliberately excluded from having white privilege for a very long time. Some might say that in the UK, in large parts, they still don't have it. They still are not regarded as white, which just goes to show how stupid racism is. The only Irish that are regarded as white are those with stereotypical anglo-norman features, and even then they lose that status if they keep their accents. The black-irish, the travellers, or the lumpy-featured red-curly haired "red" Irish (yeah, I know that sounds clumsy, but basically just look at Colm Meaney, him, he's red irish although not overly so) are just an example of how white privilege is so ridiculously attributed.

As the anon who posed the question and hasn't posted in this thread since, I'm just confused who this discussion is going between now. Because I forgot to check back to be a part of it.
