Alcott's work is preachy by modern standards, yes. But Rose never had to choose between doing a morally questionable thing that earned her lectures from the men in her life and being poor. The being poor part is what mitigates the writing morally questionable stories, IMO. When it comes to your family, you do what you have to and Jo's sensational stories hurt no one. Delicate sensibilities don't count.
