I've taken my meds consistently since I was seven all the way up to last year. Then I suddenly gained a gag reflex and now it's an effort to make myself do it more than three days in a row. It's troublesome. I'm so anxious right now that the thought of talking to my best friend scares me, and, well, he's my best friend. I shouldn't feel like this. They stop me from feeling like this. But I just can't take them normally anymore, and changing them to something smaller isn't an option (it was hard enough to find something that even worked). Sigh. How do you guys make yourselves do things you don't want to do?

Getting the obvious question out of the way first, have you talked to your doctor to see if the gagging might be a symptom of something else?

What are you taking, specifically? There are a lot of different preparations for medications, usually, so that if swallowing is an issue there are other ways they can be administered.

Try squeezing your left thumb in your fist as you swallow the pill. It's supposed to quell the gag reflex. I mean it might be an old wives tale, but since I specifically didn't look for extra verification of it, it worked for me. Can't hurt to give it a try?

I've never been able to take pills. I nearly choked once as a kid, and I have a really strong gag reflex. So I have to grind pills and then take them with soda. It is the only thing that works for me.

I can take them now. But when I was younger my grandma used to crush them up into pudding for me to take. :P

Solids don't work for me. If I put them in food, the ground pill texture is inveriably different than the food, and I end up gagging (I have issues with textures). It has to be a strong tasting liquid. Diet coke has proved to be the best.

You can't (and shouldn't necessarily) do that with all meds, though. Some medications are meant to be slow release and crushing them changes how well they work.

I always check with my doctor to make sure they know how I take the pills and if it will be a problem for a particular one. I've never had a situation where, if there was a pill I couldn't do that for, there wasn't a non slow-release version or an alternative drug I could take.

Mouthful of food instead of liquid. Applesauce, marmalade, something thick enough to "hide" the pill, and just swallow like you would a regular mouthful of food.

Best of luck. Popping pills sucks, but it's better than the alternative. Trust me.

Can you squish them and put them in food? Or is that not allowed?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Depending on the pill, it might be really important that it doesn't open up in any way before it hits the stomach. Some you can crush up no problem, but others have to be taken whole or they don't work/do bad things to your body.

I just suck it up and do it. That's all there is to it for me.

I'm sorry to hear about your gag reflex problems though.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Just push myself through it and take every possible opportunity to think of someone or something that inspires me, or such a person encouraging me to keep it together until the thing I don't like is over.

If the current method isn't working, I approach it from a different angle.

Do you have pills? Can you split/crush them? If not, can you go back to the doctor and try a different med that won't make you gag?

But before that... and this may sound silly... have you researched the cause of the gag reflex? Have you mentioned to your doctor you've developed one?

I don't know if this would work for you, but the way I take pills is to take a mouthful of liquid first and drop the pills into my mouth, so they never actually touch anything but the drink until after I swallow.

If that doesn't do it for you, then maybe try rewarding yourself every time you take them consistently? Either way, good luck, and I hope your anxiety improves. <3

I do this too. I also tilt my head back and swallow.
