Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else got writer's block atm? Mine is so bad right now, it's like I've lost the ability to write anything worthwhile.

Right now I'm rereading a fandom classic (obviously not by me) and crying with frustration into some ice cream.

What's the fandom classic?

'A Matter of Death and Life' by Rheanna on AO3 (Stargate Atlantis).

I'm a sucker for McKay/Sheppard. I've never read this. I am intrigued.

Thanks for posting it, anon.

SA Let me know if you enjoyed it or not. It's a personal favorite.

If John had been entertaining any illusions that his life would become less eventful once Atlantis was located within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge rather than on a distant planet in the Pegasus galaxy, he lost them the day they almost blew up San Francisco.

The opening line grabbed me and made me giggle. We're off to a good start.

I will report back tomorrow!

Yes :\

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I practically always have writer's block until something inspires me,

Ugh yes

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Personal goal: 500 words/day
Reality: 400 words/3 months

The longer I don't write, the more discouraged I feel, and the less I write. This is gonna be a bitch and a half to get out of.

Re: Ugh yes

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I can top that.

Personal goal: 100 words a day.

Actual accomplishment: 100 games of minesweeper played; one large bag Hershey's Miniatures consumed.

Yep. :/

Shit yeah, I feel ya.

I keep reworking scenes but the details keep biting me in the ass. It's hard to keep something traumatic believable yet within the admittedly at times gray borders of a certain rating.

I've been "working" on the next chapter of the WIP I'm writing for ... (checks calendar) ... six months. It's a story I care about (been working on it in my head for years :p), I have it all outlined, and even have the final paragraph written. And yet ... six months of nothing. (Well, not nothing. I've seen lots of pictures of cute animals on tumblr.)

Two weeks ago I just gave up, gave myself permission NOT to write it at all, ever. I backed up the files, then deleted them from my computer, then focused on chores, cooking, and videogames. After ten days I was so mopey and cranky that a family member sat me down, and said, "Why can't you write? You used to write a lot! Why was it easier back then?" When I told them that 'back then' I had people in the fandom to chat with, they said, "Wellm, try me -- I'm listening." They asked me to tell them about the story -- what I'd writeen already, how I planned to end it, etc. This went on for an hour: by the time I was done I couldn't get those fucking files back on my computer fast enough, because danmit, I had reminded myself that this was a story I didn't want to give up on.

If whatever you're trying to write isn't worth your time, then let it go, anon -- but if it is, find someone to talk to about it in realtime (IM, Skype, face to face). Whatever works for you. If you don't know anyone in your fandom, ask here; there's likely to be someone who you can bounce ideas with.

You've got an awesome family member there.

If I tried to tell one of mine what I was writing about, they'd be all "WTF are you writing THAT shit for?!" with some variation of "you need to be saved."

Re: not op

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
*grins* thanks.

This particular family member has something of an ulterior motive, though - they think that once I finished the fic in questions I'll be free to write Warhammer 40K fics :p

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of block. I have scenes that pop up, but no friggin links. Like...I understand something happened--my brain sees it fine, but how do I put it into words? How do I make myself (and by extension the reader) give two craps about what happened between those two "events"

tl;dr: Most of the writing that the fic needs is introspective (from the character's POV) and I don't wanna write it/think about it now/ but I want to post this shit already!

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
OP

This is exactly the problem I'm having. I have pages and pages of scenes, and cannot find the words to link them!

It all plays out in my head, but getting it on paper... Oi.

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

EXACTLY!!! I keep hoping I'll wake up and suddenly get it, but...alas...nope.

Maybe some music to inspire the scenes? What kind of situation is going in your fic (if you care to share)?

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Music's a good idea. Does that work for you??

I actually have 49 fics all suffering this exact problem. It's really frustrating! Um, the most pernicious one is an AU that I can see in its entirety in my head, but can't get past the opening on paper.

How about you, what's the scenario in yours?

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sometimes music works, but it's hard trying to find the proper mood then the proper music, and I'm sometimes wary of fanmixes, as the relationship I'm writing about is a contentious one.

Mine is also AU (dead in canon, villain wakes up in an alternate universe, but no one knows him and the world is very much as we [the reader] knows it) it won't exactly be romantic, as the two main characters are practically archenemies. I'm just concerned about getting their voices and interactions right, but really RIGHT, to the point that even though it's AU you can totally imagine it as an episode.

I suggest just start writing, even if it's irrelevant, as least you're getting a flow, and as that carries on, think about your favorite scene and start trying to depict that (even if it seems like utter rubbish--you can go back and fix it)

Any recs for antagonistic relationship/UST/scheming music?

Good luck!

Re: Writers block RAH

(Anonymous) 2014-09-12 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the advice, I think you're probably right and that I need to just start writing. Are you going to try that approach too?

Hmmm. For scheming music, I would look at film and game scores - they are often rich sources of atmospheric, very tense music that are not too distracting.

Antagonistic relationship I'm stuck on I'm afraid. Maybe ask in a thread tomorrow.

As for UST, I would suggest loading any music you find sexy? Led Zepellin's 'Since you've been gone' is my go to for heavy UST.

Good luck to you too, anon! And thanks again for the advice.

I've had it for a couple years now :/

I've had writer's block for about a year, despite attempts to write several different ideas, for several fandoms. :( It's very frustrating.

Re: Writers block RAH

I'm sorry OP! I hope you can find inspiration to continue writing! I hate writer's block too. I'm currently kind of struggling with my story as well. I know what I want to happen, but I'm just having a bit of a struggle working up the energy to write it down. I'm writing this fic for a friend and she seems to have gone through something rather major today (emotionally) so that may motivate me to finish this fic up faster and try to cheer her up a bit if I can with the fic.
