If he can just magic himself up a beard and do all sorts of other things, why bother with the testosterone at all? Why not just cut out the middle-man and give himself a male body?

The magic in the universe is more limited than that poster seems to think. There's a canon trans MtF character in the same universe who is an accomplished mage, but she doesn't have a female body, so I think if drastic change like that was possible, she would have done it already.

Yeah, her name's Maevaris, she's a Tevinter magister who appears in the Those Who Speak comic and was married to Varric's cousin.
