If I can talk it out with someone, that's usually best, especially if I can rely on them to be honest and call me out on my shit (as well as others). Empathy's easy, but it's still hard for me to be objective in the moment about things that affect me, and actual logic and self-reflection happen later after I've settled. So having that third party there to listen and tell you what they think is great, not only for speeding up the thought process, but for the sheer relief of venting. So long as that person isn't a doucherod of course.

Folk aren't always on call though. If I can simply leave and go for a walk, aimlessly or not, I will. If leaving is not an option (say you're at work), I just get to making work for myself if not just loading up on distractions. Anything that busies my hands to release some of that negative energy, or gets my mind occupied on some other thing. Things like cleaning and scrubbing all the things, or a particularly engaging movie or game. Even busting open old textbooks to see if I can still solve old problems helps.

or helps me feel disappointed in myself when i can't
