He's hit and miss for me. I find all of his writing enjoyable, but little of it truly great. He's a far better comic and short story writer than he is a novelist, for one thing.

Pro-tip: Try "Kraken" and "Un Lun Dun" by China Miéville; they're both like Gaiman if he were a great writer instead of a good one.
