Organizing music

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you organize the music on you iPod/mp3-player/portable music playing device/whatever?

Asking because I'm organizing mine by mood and I've been told that's unusual, but that way I don't have to skip around constantly, so... Does anyone else do this?

I organize mine by playcount on my ipod, which I believe is also pretty unusual. But as far as how it's sorted on the computer, it's in alphabetical folders.

I have an Upbeat playlist, and a "Low-key instrumental" one.

I also have these two folders.

I basically just have it alphabatized by song name, but on my iPod/Itunes I do have a playlist that I am almost always on of songs I personally want to here more of, stuff that I would sing-along to in the car; the songs I haven't become bored or tired of yet.

by album. i track down every album's cover art obsessively, no matter how obscure. considering i have like 90go of music, i spend a lot of time on google image. it's frustrating sometimes, especially when i have to create my own cover art for podcasts or whatever. oh well, at least it looks nice.

It's just alphabetized.

I don't. I've got a workout playlist, but everything else is 'shuffle everything all the time.'

Re: Organizing music

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't work with that. Do you skip a lot or are you always happy with whatever comes up?

Re: Organizing music

Skip a lot. But I have the musical attention span of a fruit fly, so I don't know until a song comes up whether or not it's going to be a song I'm in the mood for right now, and I have a lot of music so I get a lot of "Ooh, forgot I even had this song and it's perfect right now" moments.

Language, then alphabetically.

Mostly just by albums and downloads.

I once tried lyric vs. non-lyrical or minimal-lyrical. That didn't work and I've since given up on listening to my own music since my computer's fans run high when a song or video is played. It's old, goes to 2007.

On my MP3 player - by artist, then by album, with the songs labelled to play in order. 'Various artists' albums and loose tracks are just dropped into the root directory.

On my computer - mostly the same, but Japanese music, and soundtracks/OCRs each get their own folders. The Japanese folder is subdivided the same way as the root.

I binge-download music that makes me think of whatever story I'm writing. If it's a full album I keep it in its own folder and if it's a mix of stuff I put it in its own folder and give it a stupid name like "Far Away and Cold" or "Green Liquid Soaking Through".

I love folder names like that. :) I've named one folder "Songs to slay dragons to" and filled it with songs that give you some kind of "Fuck yeah; I can do this!" feeling.

ayrt - Oh awesome. I might borrow that.

I am terribly lazy about tagging my mp3s. As long as they load in the proper order by filename I don't give two shits. So I make a point of not buying mp3 players where I can't browse by folder.

By Album. Nice and simple.

I don't really organize per say. I have one long playlist with all my favorite songs that I put on shuffle most of the time. I do have a plane playlist of softer, relaxing songs and one playlist of all the Star Wars soundtracks. But most of the time, I'm not looking for particular songs and just do shuffle and listen to whatever comes up.

I'm organizing by mood (happy songs, sad songs, empowering songs etc), but then I've also got genre folders like "Musicals" and "Classical". Also I've got a folder for oldies that's sorted chronologically.

Organize? You mean like, playlists?

If so, they're sort of a cross between moods and genres.

I use a bunch of playlists.

First is Courage Music, which is when I need a dose of musical encouragement.

Then there's Creativity Music, which consists of music that helps puts me in a creative frame of mind.

After that is my Dark Brotherhood mix, which helps keep me focused when I'm on a contract tending my garden. Yeah, that's the ticket.

My Disney playlist needs no explanation.

Energy Music keeps me pumped when I need to be.

Green Sweater is for...knitting, yes.

Happy Music helps when I'm depressed.

Humor is for when I need a laugh.

Instrumental is, as implied by the name, low-key instrumental stuff.

Relaxing Music helps me sleep.

And finally, Wrock, because I'm a massive Harry Potter geek.

So, yeah. I really like organizing playlists.
