The idea that every conservative is a selfish asshole makes me think of everyone in the Harry Potter books thinking every Slytherin is a selfish asshole.

I grew up hating Republicans and conservatives (given the people I was surrounded by -- who were fucking caricatures of liberal stereotypes of conservatives -- this isn't surprising), but going out in the world helped me to change my view of people who just so happen to disagree with me.

It helps that one of the people I respect most in the world is a conservative Republican.

I think it can definitely be about where you are. I live in a ruralish community that tends to be conservative, so I've seen the caricatures, but I've also seen people who are just conservative but, you know, good people. I even know some people who manage to be both - their political views are wacky (in my personal opinion), but they mean well and they're not bad people.

I'm pretty sure the media and mindset of the country has warped the meaning of 'conservative'.

Sure too many of them are invested in other people's business, but I thought it was more about business practices - well, at least at first.

Yeah, especially internet media. Looking at Upworthy, for instance, you'd expect every conservative to be a straw.

I agree with this. But then again, I grew up with a family of Republicans (though both my parents have become independents in recent years on account of some of the nonsense in the Republican party). I think the Republican Party stances themselves are selfish and morally repugnant, and I feel that a vast majority of Republicans are selfish assholes (and even those who are "economically conservative" have some class issues since I think Republican economics are inherently classist). But I think there are individuals within the party who are perfectly decent people who I just happen to think are really wrong when it comes to politics.
