I have to stifle an overwhelming urge to correct anyone who spells "discreet" as "discrete."

It's weird because I don't have this urge with any other common errors or mix-ups, like you're/your or they're/their/there. It's only discreet/discrete that does it.

I didn't know they were two different words until today.

discreet: careful and circumspect in one's speech or actions, especially in order to avoid causing offense or to gain an advantage.
ex: "we made some discreet inquiries"

discrete: individually separate and distinct.
ex: "speech sounds are produced as a continuous sound signal rather than discrete units"

I sound like such a doucebag LOL :D

Me too!

I still notice the others but I don't have that sort of "WRONG. YOU ARE WRONG." reaction in my head. Maybe because they're really common?

I think for me it's that even people who otherwise have flawless spelling and grammar tend to do that particular mix-up, so it crops up in situations where I'm really not expecting it.

I'm like this with pretty much any and all homonyms.

I'm like that with "college" and "collage". They're not really homonyms and every time I read "I'm going to collage" it makes me go asfgkjshfg.

This one's really hard for me, because we only use discrete for discrete mathematics in my language, and we spell it the same as discreet in that application.

I'm also really sad that discreet mathematician jokes don't work in English because of this. :(
