She kind of exists in that area of representation where it becomes very hard to distinguish a "wholesome crossdresser," from a trans woman from what I've seen. She basically is trans, but sometimes the characters act as though she's male, and you sometimes get people who argue that you can't take gender presentation in anime at face value because of Kabuki, or Takarazuka*, or differing norms.

But like I said she's essentially trans.

*freaking love Takarazuka and Kabuki by the way, wasn't dissing them.

Thanks for the reply! I guess I really ought to read/watch it and see for myself so I don't ask silly questions. @_@

Well for example the first major story is involved with which washroom Aoi should use, but she doesn't particularly care (at least in the anime, I've never read the manga despite liking most of Fujishima's other stuff).

She started, "cross dressing," while on Vice, and just decided it was natural for her, but she isn't on hormones or anything like that (not that all people who identify as trans take hormones but a bunch do).

I think she's 95% how you'd expect a trans person to be portrayed, but sometimes it's hard to tell if the writer(s) know the difference between a crossdresser and a trans woman.
