Space Opera Recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Somebody rec me some visual military space opera (essentially anything that features large helpings of space politics and space battles)? Animated or live action, it's all good. I've watched a LOT of them, and I'm hoping there's something new/old/obscure that I've previously missed.

For the record, I've seen Star Trek (all), Stargate (all), Star Wars, BSG (old and new), Babylon 5, Blake's 7, Flash Gordon, Gundams (SEED, Wing), various Power Rangers, and random bits of Macross, Captain Harlock, and Irresponsible Captain Taylor.

I have no idea but this intrigues me! Would Doctor Who qualify or is it just not military enough?

…. Now I want a Doctor Who musical.

AYRT

Doctor Who is an old favourite too. And I suppose I should count it, there's enough interspecies wars involved, and enough doomsday weapons to stock a small universe with. So ... yeah, it probably should count too?

I don't know what a Who musical would sound like. I'm not sure I want to :)

Farscape?

I think I saw a couple of episodes here or there, but I never looked into it more. Possibly I should try again.

Watch past season 1. Season 2 is where it starts to get good.

Legend of The Galactic Heroes sounds like it would be right up your alley.

I've heard of this one, but only vaguely. And, ah, with a nickname of 'Boring Germans in Space', which sounds a little off-putting. You'd say it's good, then?

It is pretty good and well worth a watch imo. There's a lot of focus on the politics and the characters are pretty great.

DA chiming in to say that it's really good and it sounds like it'd be right up your alley if you want space politics and space fleet battles.

Came here to rec this, a ton of people really like it and it's apparently really well plotted and characterized. It's been on my backburner list for years.

I was also going to recommend this.

Old school visuals, and 110 eps just in the main series, iirc.

Well, if you like video games, there's always Mass Effect.

I can confidently say I have zero talent for videogames whatsoever. I have heard that the ME universe is fascinating in terms of worldbuilding, though. Is there tie-in material, or anything?

Yes. It's bad.

Jack Vance's The Demon Princes would fit your bill almost exactly...if only someone would make a series out of it.

Are you just going for TV/movies or would you accept a comic series? If so, I suggest Sigil from Crossgen.

It's a webcomic, but how about Schlock Mercenary? It's got everything you want . . . the bad thing, it is very long, and the very earliest stuff is pretty badly drawn. I recommend starting with either the Resident Mad Scientist arc, or maybe Longshoreman of the Apocalypse if you want something more recent.

Starship Operators (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Operators) isn't real long, and it has some interesting conceits about the mechanics of space battles. (They have jump tech, and communication is instaneous, somehow, but space battleships otherwise have to be very concerned with inertia.)

Starship Troopers? it made me feel rather queasy, but for the sake of completeness...
