Don't feel bad, OP, I remember watching Kimba the White Lion in the 60s, as well as Gigantor and Astro Boy. In the 70s, I adored Battle of the Planets (and, when I found the original series, Gatchaman, I loved that even more). In the 80s, I watched The Dirty Pair, City Hunter, Megazone 23, Nausicaa, RoboTech, Cosmo Police Justy, Space Adventure Cobra, Go Shogun, and others I can't recall at the moment. Fullmetal Alchemist is still my go-to, though; when it comes to me pointing out a manga to people who aren't sure if they're interested or not.

My favorite story about 'whippersnapper anime fans' comes from one of my best friends. She was holding a garage sale, and some young teens saw her collection of Animanga and Roman Albums for sale, and were all excited until they couldn't recognize any of the characters. "Oh, my gosh, it's so old!"
"Maybe it's issue number one!"
"No, wait...it's just old!"

I was just thinking of Battle of the Planets as I was reading this thread! Now there's some old anime (or an old adaptation, anyway.)

Early 70s for the first season of Gatchaman, if I remember correctly. I can't remember when Gatchaman II nor when the third season (Gatchaman Fighter) came out.

I wish seasons two and three were translated, despite the inconsistencies and goofiness of the story lines. And none of the subsequent main villains ever compared to Berg Katse.

I have some great Gatchaman ephemera - original posters, cels, and a couple of action figures I've collected over the years. Oh, and an adorable series of stuffed teddy bears in the team uniforms.

Ah man, I watched Battle of the Planets when I was a little kid & used to play it with my sister. Hardly anyone of my age knew what the heck I was talking about until I got into anime circles. It killed me when watching the dvds that had the American version and the original Japanese version.
American version: Timmy your dad miraculously survived his plane blowing up, he's an American Hero, everything is wonderful again.
Japanese version: Kid, your dads dead, you're an orphan now. Well bye then

7-Zark-7! "Don't worry, that entire spaceship that blew up? We managed to rescue everyone before the bomb went off! Despite there only being five seconds left on the timer!"

And having to travel to other planets to rescue people.
