I'm not sure I see the point in living anymore.

(Note, I'm not suicidal. It's just that, if you asked me "what are you living for?", I would not have an answer.)

It's a misconception that you have to find a purpose in life to be happy. Most people don't have an ultimate purpose or "calling", as it turns out. That doesn't need to stop you from living a fulfilling life.

Pick something, set a goal, work toward that goal. It doesn't really matter what it is as long as it's something you like doing or that makes you feel good about yourself.

It could be getting a degree or a certification, volunteering, creating art or music... anything.

The key to happiness is just to be doing something with yourself.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, the big secret is that life really doesn't have a point. You can do whatever you want with it.

But if there's no point, then why bother? Why waste the energy?

I don't want my life to be one long session of busy work to keep myself occupied. I WANT my life to have a point. I'm just not talented enough or smart enough or ANYTHING enough to affect the world in any significant way. I don't want to be a waste of space, but that's exactly what I am.

I WANT my life to have a point.

Right there. There's your point. Because you want your life to have a point.

You don't have to change the world in a grand way, just be yourself and try hard not to fuck anyone else in the ass. (Unless, of course, they're into that. I don't judge.) Chances are, you are currently affecting at least one person's life in a significant way.

The whole thing about leaving a legacy, or making insane amounts of waves in the world, that's all ego. True, if what you want is to leave some huge mark on the world, then that's technically also a purpose, or point, or whatever. But it's up to you to decide. Do what you love. If you're not good at anything, then find out what you are good at. It's cliché, but no one else can live your life but you.

Well, that's the point. Even if you became a modern day hero or cured AIDS or invented something, in a few decades it might matter a little. In a hundred years you would be lucky if someone remembered your name. In a thousand years, it's likely no one would know who you were.

In five thousand years (assuming humanity is still around by then) it's all but certain no one would know who you were.

In a million years, our culture as we know it will no longer exist.

In a hundred million years? Well, then we start getting into the realm of our race as we know it no longer existing.

Is there a point to that? Likely not. Life is a cruel and random thing, the universe is destined to collapse, etc etc.

But the flip side of that is that you don't have to let that define your experience here while you exist. Since, ultimately, there is no point to life, you get to decide what that point is. If you want to affect the world, go out and help someone who needs help. You would be surprised how many opportunities there are for normal, seemingly talentless people to do something as simple as providing food for someone who is hungry or being a voice for someone who doesn't have one.

Volunteer. Put your energy towards improving the lives of those around you. You may not have the skills to be famous or revolutionize the world, but you can definitely make a difference in your community.
