In the world of literature, we use the term "reading" or "interpretation" instead of "headcanon". And sure, we bicker about it, but a particular reading of a character exists to explain or add meaning to a text, not to show off that you're better than someone else. And really, it doesn't matter if you're doing this from fandom or academia, add meaning, please, and stop trying to stomp on people who are wanting to add meanings that are incompatible with your own reading. Multiple interpretations can exist simultaneously.

I really do think that headcanons in some corners of fandom really are less about character interpretation and more about people trying to one-up each other in terms of who can be edgier and the most socially aware so that, yes, they can feel superior.

You think Dean Winchester is straight? Booooring. He's totally gay.
You think he's gay? That's so played out. He's absolutely trans.
Just trans? You're so closed-minded. He's trans AND he's gay.
Snore. He's trans AND gay, but he used to think he was bi and now he just might be poly. And a furry.

Yes, this. And folks RUSH to be the first to come up with their unique and and extra special head canons, which they copied from someone else. It's tiresome.
