Wait, what? What did Meyer rip off of?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

IIRC, somebody accused Meyer of stealing the Twilight idea from her, but it turned out not to be true. But I can't remember if it was the report itself that wasn't true or the accusation.

Oh okay. I vaguely remember hearing about that.

Twilight started its existence as a Harry Potter fanfic. It was still available to read online in its original form even after Twilight had been published.

Are you sure you're not thinking of The Mortral Instruments?

That was The Mortal Instruments series by Cassie Clare, not Twilight.

I'm really amused by this because, when I read your original comment, I was like "I bet this person is confusing 'The Mortal Instruments' with 'Twilight.'" And, wouldn't you know...that's exactly what you're doing.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-15 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. Twilight certainly isn't great but it is original--her inspiration (such as it was) was a dream of what turned out to be the meadow scene in the first book. If you'd actually read it you'd know it has absolutely nothing to do with Harry Potter.

Which is why, as much crap as SM gets, I actually think she's surprisingly gracious about 50 Shades. If I were she I'd've thought about suing--as I said, with all its faults, at least Twilight is original.
