You seriously managed to miss the insanity that was the Onceler fandom? Man, I wish I were that lucky.

D: So I start to suspect. I only caught a glimpse of it - a couple of PWP fics on AO3. My tumblr mutuals aren't the sort, apparently. (and then 70% of them are classic Holmesians and don't post about other things much).

Okay, when the Lorax came out, tumblr absolutely fell hard in for it. Like, you know when Disney movies come out and fandom can't shut up about them, that's what the Onceler fandom was like. And everything was focused on how fucking hot the Onceler was, like these tumblrites had never seen a man before in their life. There were probably a couple hundred ask blogs at once point where the Oncler had a gimmick to set them apart from the other bunches of Onceler ask blogs and things got weird fast. I wish I could find the list someone made of all the Onceler blogs, because there were some gems.

Yep, even as an animation fan, I don't really care for most of the big hits that rest of fandom goes crazy over. My bias against 3DCG and Disney probably has something to do with it, but you know.

I think it just has to be shiny and the guy has to look 'ok'. The Lorax wasn't done by a big studio actually, but it played to the lowest common denominator and...it showed in the fandom.

The dude who found Illumination Entertainment has some pretty big connections in the industry and it's not like it didn't have advertising out the wazoo.

The funny part was how it suddenly died out just as quick as it started. I swear to goodness, the Onceler shit was EVERYWHERE for the better part of a year... and then, poof, it pretty much all but disappeared like a fart in the wind. I saw Onceler stuff all over DeviantArt, and now you'd be hard pressed to find something in the 24 hour/3 day range, give or take.

Apropos of nothing, but I seem to recall that a large chunk of the Onceler fandom overlapped with Homestuck -at least, many of the Onceler stuff I saw came from people who dabbled in Homestuck-, so that could also be a huge part of it. Not sure what they all moved onto after that... probably best we don't know.

I wish I could find the list someone made of all the Onceler blogs, because there were some gems.
