Doctor Who - Listen

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
So, has anyone else gotten around to seeing it? What were your thoughts about the episode?

Its great, but there is a bit in it that the fanatical anti-Moffs are going to latch on to and scream and rant about. Its an ode to ambiguity and literally everything, including the bit the anti-Moffs are going to soil their diaper over, is intentionally ambiguous with a minimum of one other alternative and plausible explanation for.

I feel reaaaaaaaally stupid for asking this, but what bit was that? I can think of a couple of possibilities...

I would presume it would be the scene in the barn near the end.

I didn't hate the episode but I didn't really find it well written or creepy like it should have been. I mostly liked it for the same reasons I have liked any episodes this season, Clara and the Doctor.

I expected it to be a lot more creepy than it was, but I am loving Capaldi as The Doctor so far.

I didn't like it. Not because of anything to do with canon or plausibility or anything like that, or because I dislike Moffat or Capaldi (this is probably my least favorite episode of the season so far, and I really like Capaldi as the Doctor). It just never engaged with me.

I think the problem is that I never bought into the basic premise of the episode - the idea that there could conceivably be this kind of being out there. It just seemed totally ridiculous. From the opening monologue, I couldn't believe that the Doctor was taking this seriously. Like, what, there's some species out there that's constantly following everyone around when they think they're alone, and they're also hiding under the bed, and they're evolved to be impossibly good at hiding, and also they're supposed to be a massive horrifying threat? Maybe I would have bought into it if it was more specifically "the boogeyman under the bed", rather than "perfect camouflage", but as it was, it just seemed absurd.

So, given that, the whole rest of the premise of the episode was difficult to buy into. I can get the idea of little kids being afraid of the dark, but when it was initially presented in such a general form, it was hard to take seriously. I liked a lot of the character beats, in principle - the idea of Clara going back to the Doctor's childhood is basically cool and fine and good. And the stuff with Clara and Danny and Orson was fine, if a little overly clever (like Moffat often is). It just never engaged with me emotionally, so it's hard for me to see it as a work of genius like people seem to be saying. I wish I could see it that way. Just didn't work for me.

This. It was just a dumb premise, Moffat trying to do his old "making you scared of everyday things" routine and failing. I started tuning out in that opening monologue when he was acting like "a creature whose defense is ability to hide" was some new thing that had never occurred to anyone rather than a really common thing that animals do.

From the opening monologue, I couldn't believe that the Doctor was taking this seriously. I didn't like the opening monologue at all...felt it was a little too heavy-handed. I also admit I would've liked more lead-up to it. It felt like a random way to open the episode.

(I did like the speech about fear though, and thought that was some excellent writing. The rest of it was sort of so-so, but Capaldi has been almost perfect so far so I did get something out of it. The episode could've been better though, IA. I was hoping it was going to be spooky, and it really wasn't.)

My thoughts were that I liked it and yet I didn't. The beginning was genuinely scary. The first time I've actually ever been scared by Doctor Who. And I loved Clara's speach to the young Doctor and that whole scene. And yet, I was disappointed, given the genuinely scary parts, that there wasn't a monster in the end.

So I'm not really sure what I think at the moment.

This was a thread for reviews of the episode. Why would a spoiler tag be necessary in a thread that is going to be all spoilers?

I think when somebody makes a thread asking if you've seen an episode and what your thoughts are on it, then one presumes that it's highly likely that there will be spoilers in them and should probably avoid said thread until you've seen the episode (especially now that comments have collapsed and can avoid it based on the title of the thread very easily.).

If you can't handle that go back to tumblr where everything under the sun is nicely tagged for you, including trigger warnings for salad.

I enjoyed the first bit a lot, with the Rupert kid and all that but then it got to the part with the last planet and the end of everything and......?? Didn't need that. But it caught up afterwards with the kid!Doctor thing, which was nice. Oh and Orson being Clara's descendant because she marries Danny later on would be awfully lame if they're planning on really just leaving it at that so I hope they'll not keep it that simple.

The only thing that has been bugging me since yesterday, though, was that speech that the Doctor gave to Rupert about 'being scared is a superpower' and all that, we get to know later on that Clara was actually the one who got to tell him that when he was a child....and Clara heard it from the Doctor first...but if it wasn't for her telling him about it when he was a kid, he wouldn't have said it to Rupert when he got older.....so who gets the credit for it? I hate this loop thing, my brain doesn't want to let it go.

Anyway, overall it was a good watch and I loved the interactions between Clara and the Doctor so far.
