Even though my FMA1 experience wasn't quite as rosy as yours, I can't help but feel that it really was a jolly decent fandom back in the day. There was a lot of good fic, like real speculative stuff too, and the fact that there were no canon pairings actually made it really nice for shipping.

High five for first real fandom as well! (and I too liked it better than Brotherhood)
