The Swedish election is a depressing story

(Anonymous) 2014-09-14 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm following the election best I can ( though I should go to bed soon).

* Neo-Nazis have invaded voting stations and smashed stuff

* Feministiskt Initiativ's voters were told to pick something else when there wasn't F! ballots

* MP (green party) had their ballots removed in Stöde.

* In Haninge all ballots were stolen and replaced with nationalist party Svenskarnas Parti.

This is depressing and infuriating. I'm not sure that I want to wake up tomorrow if this is what it's going to be like.

I'm sorry. As someone who lives in a state with frequent voting problems you have my sympathies.

Thanks. I just can't remember that it has ever been like this before. It's bad enough that the Swedish Democrats ( right wing nationalists) has gotten 13% of the votes to the Parliament.

What a mess. :( My sympathies. I'm not looking forward to our next election in the UK - especially if Scotland votes to leave. I don't understand why all the crazy nationalists are suddenly getting in all over Europe.

I hope when you wake up tomorrow it's not as bad as you think it will be. :/

It really is. The nationalists have taken way too much space. Also, with the Swedish Democrats and Feministiskt Initiativ pitted against each other, SD won unfortunately. F! had massive drive at the EU elections, but I feel that this time they weren't seen enough.

When's the Scots election?

Oh shit, I'm sorry. :( Is there another mainstream party there that's remotely sane?

It's on the 18th. My family are half-English, half-Scottish so I'm feeling pretty sick to my stomach about it.

The biggest parties are the Social Democrats ( left) and Moderaterna ( right, conservative) and then there are a few parties in alliances with the big two. We did get a shift of Parliament today, though. Social Democrats got 31,3%. Their allies Vänsterpartiet ( far left) and MP, the green got 5,7 and 6,8 respectively. The bar for getting a place in Parliament is 4%.

Oh no! I'm so sorry. I do hope things will turn out alright for you. :(

What do you think might happen that's bad if Scotland leaves the UK? Will it leave a power/influence vacuum that the nutcases will rush to fill?

NAYRT I'm assuming that anon is refering to the fact that Scotland has a large number of Labour seats (used to be left-ish, now central with a slight right lean). If they leave the UK then there will be a higher Tory (corrupt, right, elitist) majority.

Labour aren't great, but they're better than the ignorant rich boys currently in power.

D: I've always thought of Sweden as having one of the more progressive and, well, nice/normal/reasonable societies and political bodies out there. Has this kind of thing been sort of growing lately? It sounds like the kind of thing you'd hear about in, like, Belarus or something. Admittedly I don't really follow Swedish politics, but this is really startling to me.

Sweden advertises itself as progressive because it can afford to and it's a good way to attract liberal tourists. By many other countries' standards of what liberal includes (income and gender equality, gay marriage), it is a lot better, but then you have the other side of the coin with fuckery like this that they don't talk about.

- not a Swede or the OP, but someone who's been learning for years Sweden isn't the great place to move that it once seemed
