This comment has made me realize that I sometimes choose books based on the sex of their protagonist because of how I assume that that character will be written on account of their assigned sex. This is why, for example, I almost NEVER will read a romantic story from a female POV, because it's nearly always written to make her exactly the kind of character I have no patience with. Gender essentialism seems to sometimes be a stand-in for personality as far as some writers are concerned.
